NetBeans 6.7.1 Updates. UML, Woodstock, and SOA for NetBeans 6.8. Solution?
I wrote about problems getting updates for NetBeans 6.7.1. I also wrote about dropping support for UML, VisualWeb (a.k.a Woodstock), and SOA/JBI/BPEL modules in NetBeans 6.8. It looks like found a solution for both problems.
Problem 1: Unable to get beta updates for NetBeans 6.7.1 (includes VisualWeb/Woodstock, UML, SOA/JBI/BPEL, XML, Python modules and extras).
Solution: Point your “NetBeans Beta” update center from http://updates.netbeans.org/netbeans/updates/6.7.1/uc/final/beta/catalog.xml.gz to http://updates.netbeans.org/netbeans/6.7.1/fixes/2010-04-10_20-12-29/uc2/catalog.xml.gz . Please note the timestamp in the URL, hence, it may work for initial installation only. Not sure if this will work for subsequent updates.
Problem 2: NetBeans dropped support for favorite modules like VisualWeb/Woodstock, UML, SOA/JBI/BPEL.
Solution: Point your “NetBeans Beta” update center from http://updates.netbeans.org/netbeans/updates/6.8/uc/final/beta/catalog.xml.gz to http://updates.netbeans.org/netbeans/6.8/fixes/2010-04-25_18-00-23/uc2/catalog.xml.gz . Please note the timestamp in the URL, hence, it may work for initial installation only. Not sure if this will work for subsequent updates.
Disclaimer: I have not tested these solutions yet. Please use caution.
Still no response from NetBeans.
Update (Apr 28, 2010): I got response from NetBeans about an hour after I posted this message. They are migrating the server to a new data center and right now they are using their backup servers.
Update (Apr 30, 2010): Updates are back online. The updates above are gone. On top of that I checked the UML project, and the latest commit was in January 2010. There is no guarantee that those updates would allow the UML plug-in to work in NetBeans 6.8.

Okay. I got response from NetBeans (sent from a @sun.com email address) about an hour ago. They are migrating the server to a new data center and right now they are using their backup servers. They are expecting to be back to normal sometime tomorrow. That is very encouraging to know that there is someone in charge of NetBeans. Given the news, I will take the migration to the new data center as a good sign for NetBeans.
By the way, SwingLabs (http://www.swinglabs.org) is down. The last time Google saw it online was April 19, 2010. Could be a data center consolidation.
Update.
Solution to Problem 1. It looks like will not work as the catalog.xml.gz file does not list plug-ins even though they are located here: http://updates.netbeans.org/netbeans/6.7.1/fixes/2010-04-10_20-12-29/uc2/
Solution to Problem 2. This catalog.xml.gz (for 6.8) does list the UML and other “dropped” modules.
Is UML then working for you? Especially the reengineering stuff: “Java 2 UML” ?
I have not tried that yet.
would you mind to create such uml project (use any Java project as source) and look if there classes under the package root-nodes? (see at my NB 6.8 uml post where I wrote what I did in more detail)

I have checked commits for the UML project. There have not be any since Jan 2010. I’m afraid we will not get much out of this. But I will try anyway.
I tried several UML Plugin Versions with NB 6.7, 6.8 and 6.9beta. Its allways the same: the Reverse Engineering Option doesn’t work correctly. It tells its finished successful but if you try to expand the nodes in the left panel its empty. So you cannot generate class or sequence diagramms from code. For now I got back to nb6.5 because there is everything fine.
Sorry that I didn’t report the error that I got. I got stack overflow error. I’m using Ununtu Karmic.
Hi I thought my post previous to the above one was posted. That is why I was refering it in my previous post. Anyway, I had installed UML plugin in netbeans 6.7.1 and create a model using reverse engineer command. But when i try to create a class diagram for my package I get an empty page and sometimes i get the above error. I spent two days on this issue trying to resolve it but didn’t succeed. Please can anyone help me.
If you don’t use any other plug-ins, I’d suggest to get the OpenESB package and the UML plug-in. … That’s kind of blunt, but may help.
Having said that, I have note that the UML plug-in wasn’t very stable. May be that was one of reasons why Sun abandoned the project.

It was posted back in May when Oracle was moving Sun’s servers to another data center. Point your NetBeans to http://dlc.sun.com.edgesuite.net/netbeans/updates/6.7.1/uc/final/beta/catalog.xml.gz. It should work.
By the way, swinglabs.org (http://swinglabs.org) came back online a few months later.

Since it supports BPEL processes for Apache ODE it may be helpful for you as well.
Further it supports Artifact Types such as Apache Axis2 services, Apache CXF services, JAX-WS services, ESB artifacts for Apache Synapse and WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus, Webapps for Apache Tomcat and etc and it includes many more features.
